Overall Summary
Hess has a full arsenal of pitches, with a fastball that has hit 94 mph at times. He's added a two-seam fastball to the mix thanks to the help of Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills. Loves to challenge hitters with his fastballs. Primarily works with his slider and changeup as secondaries. His curveball is a "get me over pitch" and will likely be scrapped. His slider has shown good two-plane movement, but also has shown a scurvy feel at times. Hess' changeup has the ability to tumble, but will also get loose and stay up in the zone. His clean delivery and ability to locate his fastball allows him to be an effective starter for now, but could move to the bullpen if he's not able to throw his secondary pitches for strikes. Relies heavily on the fastball and slider. Development will continue as a starter with a mid-to-late rotation ceiling, but could be a sixth or seventh inning reliever if moved to the bullpen.
