Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 60 FB, 60 CB, 50 CH

Strengths: Extreme athlete; loose arm action; 92-to-95 mph fastball that can touch higher; explosive arm-side life; Curveball is a true hammer; can flash plus-plus; 12-to-6 shape with depth and extreme spin rate; swing-and-miss pitch when on top; has arm action and loose wrist for changeup development to continue; has natural stuff to be effectively wild in zone if reliever is ultimate future; still young — high-upside arm if development of command comes with change of scenery.

Weaknesses: Well below-average present command – large development needed to be a SP; shows reliever-only traits often; FB/CB both flash 70 grade, but command won’t let them play true; added weight and strength needed to maintain SP workload; struggles to repeat delivery – rushes often.

Role Ceiling: 60; Low #2/#3 SP.

Risk: Extreme; large gap between present and future command projection; troubling SP results in pro career.

Short Summary: It was a weird scenario last year when Atlanta had to give up very little to take on Bronson Arroyo’s contract and also receive Toussaint in the trade. During the spring of his draft year, Toussaint flashed a big-time FB/CB combo, getting him taken with the 16th-overall pick by Arizona because of it. While in pro ball, Toussaint has shown flashes of command, and flashed that same FB/CB combo shown as an amateur, as well as a projectable changeup. But overall, the results have been largely negative. If Toussaint can get his delivery under control and develop the necessary command and CH to start, he has a plus potential ceiling. But if he continues at his current development rate, he is likely to profile a high-leverage reliever.
