Player Notes
Cordoba, one of the top three picks in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft where the Padres acquired the first three picks (and all three made the club), has no pro experience above the Short-SeasonA Appalachian League, but the 21-year-old's upside is so high they will do as much as they can to keep him up in the big leagues all year in order to retain his rights. The Gulf Coast League MVP in 2015 (his stateside debut), he won the league's batting title with a .342 average and then moved up to Johnson City last year and hit .362, posting a .495 SLG despite not hitting a homer, walking more than he struck out (21:19). The native of Changuinola, Panama, grew up in an area where baseball was not very popular so he still needs experience, but he has shown natural strike zone discipline, plus speed, a strong arm and good overall quickness. Over four minor league seasons, he's combined for a .309 average and has plus defensive tools in the infield, where he can play all four positions.
