Debut Details
April 3, in a 4-3 loss to the Phillies. The second of six pitchers, he tossed one-third of a scoreless inning, throwing eight pitches. Coming on for starter and RHP Scott Feldman with two outs and two on in the fifth inning, the first batter he faced, Maikel Franco, reached on an error by shortstop Zack Cozart, but Astin then got Michael Saunders to ground out to first base to end the threat.

Player Notes
The Arkansas native with the matinee idol name had never played above the Double-A level before making his debut on Opening Day. One of the last players to lock up a spot in the bullpen, Astin's addition gave the Reds an MLB-leading four players on the 25-man roster who would be making their MLB debuts. Astin, who ranked No. 20 in Baseball America's Reds organizational prospects list coming into 2017, had been a closer for the Arkansas Razorbacks during their 2012 College World Series quest but moved into the rotation after that and started his career in the Brewers system as a starter. After acquiring him via trade in 2014, the Reds moved him back to the bullpen and that shift hoisted him right past Triple-A to the big leagues. He has thrived with a fastball/slider combination that features a low- to mid-90s sinker.
