Debut Details
August 4, in a 2-0 shutout of the Rays. The starting pitcher, he got the win, throwing 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing seven hits and walking two while striking out six. Of 97 pitches thrown, 64 were for strikes. Woodruff tossed the six-plus shutout innings by working out of bases-loaded jams in each of the first two innings. In the first, he struck out Corey Dickerson swinging before Lucas Duda singled to left. After Evan Longoria popped out foul behind first base, Logan Morrison singled and Steven Souza Jr. drew a walk to load the bases with two outs before Brad Miller grounded out back to the mound to end that threat. In the second, Wilson Ramos and Mallex Smith led off with back-to-back singles to center and left respectively before Daniel Robertson struck out swinging and Dickerson struck out on a foul tip. Duda then drew a walk to load the bases again before Longoria hit into a 6-4 force out. In the third, Morrison got things started with a single to center and Souza reached when third baseman Travis Shaw made an errant throw trying to force Morrison at second, allowing him to advance to third. Miller then struck out swinging, Ramos flew out to left and Souza was caught stealing to end the inning. In the fourth, Smith led off with another single, this time to center, before Robertson popped out foul behind third base. Woodruff then picked Smith off and got Dickerson to ground out back to the mound. In the fifth, Duda grounded out to second, Longoria flew out to left and, after Morrison singled to center, Souza struck out swinging. In the sixth, Miller grounded out unassisted to first base, Ramos lined out to second and Smith flew out to right. After Robertson struck out swinging to open the seven, left-handed reliever came on for Woodruff, who had retired the five batters he'd faced in order.

Player Notes
Woodruff, who was drafted out of Mississippi State, is one of the most interesting "debut-nots" to make his debut this season. Originally called up by the Brewers on June 13 to start against the Cardinals, he strained his hamstring while he was ON THE MOUND warming up and went straight to the DL, where he remained until being optioned back to the minors in July when he had healed. In 2016, he led the system in wins, ERA, starts, innings pitched, strikeouts and average against, combining for a 14-9 record and 2.68 ERA in 28 starts between Brevard (High A) and Biloxi (Double-A), striking out a minor-league best 173 in 158 innings and walking 40 while allowing 121 hits for a .209 BAA. With a sinking fastball in the low-to-mid 90s, a plus slider, a changeup and a consistent delivery, he could more than make up for the injuries which caused his draft status to slip three summers ago, and be an impact pitcher with a contending team. In his career, he's posted a 3.31 ERA over 79 games, striking out 352 and walking 114 in 389 innings.
