Debut Details
June 30, in a 13-5 Giants’ win over the Pirates. With the Giants leading comfortably, 13-5, in the ninth inning, Slania came on for his major league debut. He made quick work of the Pirates, retiring the side in order on 16 pitches, 10 strikes. Slania first faced Josh Bell, who popped out on a 2-1 pitch. He then retired John Jaso on a groundout to second and recorded the final out in the game by inducing a Gregory Polanco line out to right field.

Player Notes
A fifth-round pick of the Giants in 2013 out of Notre Dame, Slania was used exclusively as a reliever until midway through the 2016 season, when he moved into the rotation. His stint as a starter with Triple-A Sacramento didn’t go particularly well this season, as he allowed 14 home runs and walked 31 in 61 innings for the River Cats. The Giants are likely to use Slania in a relief role, where he excelled early in his pro career. One of the top closers in Division I while pitching for the Fighting Irish, Slania can touch 96 mph with the fastball in the relief role.
