Player Notes
The only thing that has prevented the University of Texas product from getting to the big leagues has been medical issues, not lack of talent or results. The 12th Minnesota debutante this season (and the 10th pitcher) to make it to the bigs, he's been under the radar because he's been under the knife, including Tommy John surgery in 2012 and thoracic outlet surgery in 2013. But, as his 2017 numbers can attest, when healthy there have been few minor league relievers with better results. He boasts a career 2.99 ERA and has converted 26 of 28 save opportunities, striking out 245 in 195 2/3 innings in three-plus seasons, and makes his debut after having finished 2016 split between two Class A stops, posting a 2.66 ERA and going 5-for-5 in saves between Cedar Rapids (Class A) and Fort Myers (High A). He throws a mid-90s fastball and a slider, and will toss in an occasional changeup just to change things up (word play intended).
