Debut Details
June 30, in a 2-1 Phillies’ loss to the Mets. Williams got the start on his first day in the big leagues, and he faced a tough assignment in Mets’ RHP Jacob deGrom. Playing left field and batting sixth, Williams struck out looking in his first at-bat against deGrom, which came with two outs and no one on in the second inning. In the fifth, Williams faced deGrom again, this time with one out and none on. He lined out to center on a 2-2 pitch. In his third at-bat, Williams collected his first big league hit. Still facing deGrom, Williams grounded a single to center on the first pitch he saw in the seventh inning. He would be stranded at first.

Player Notes
A second-round pick in the 2012 Draft by the Rangers, Williams was one of several top prospects sent to the Phillies in the blockbuster Cole Hamels deadline deal in 2015. After a somewhat disappointing season in Triple-A in 2016, Williams has rebounded in 2017, already surpassing his home run total from 2016 in 47 fewer games played. Williams still strikes out at a high rate (29.5% of his plate appearances this season), but he has increased his walk rate by nearly 2% from 3.6% in 2016 to 5.2% in 2017. His .213 ISO speaks to his power potential. Williams has a strong arm and enough speed to handle all three outfield positions.
