Coming on to start the bottom of the seven inning in place of left-handed reliever Zac Curtis, he struck out Ezequiel Carrera swinging and got Jose Bautista to ground out to third base before Justin Smoak hit a solo homer to center field. Steve Pearce then struck out swinging. In the eighth, Ryan Goins flied out to left before Devon Travis doubled to left, but he was stranded after Darwin Barney struck out on a foul tip, and Luke Maile struck out looking.

Player Notes
The Oregon native, drafted out of Oregon State by the Cardinals in 2011, has worked primarily as a starter in the minors but is now looking to hold down the long-relief role in Seattle, at least for now. Gaviglio, who was a member of Team Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic and made one start in the event, comes off of a 2016 season in which he combined between Jackson (Double-A) and Tacoma to go 8-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 28 games, 26 of them starts, pitching a career-high 165 innings and striking out 123 while walking 36 and giving up 163 hits. A sinker/slider pitcher, his ascent was slowed by an assortment of injuries which most notably shortened his 2013 campaign.
