Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 60 hit, 55 arm, 50 power, 50 glove

Strengths: Pure feel for hitting; plus bat speed; short, easy stroke from left side; advanced approach for age with pitch ID skills; can barrel-up premium velocity with ease; has ability to lift to the pull side; plus raw power coming with strength; can get extended on pitches in outer third; can handle left field, solid-average arm.

Weaknesses: Average overall athlete; body could be become high maintenance; defensive value limited in left field; large gap between present power and projected future power; below-average runner; hit tool is his carrying tool.

Role Ceiling: 55; above-average regular in LF.

Risk: High; limited pro ball experience; large gap between present and future potential.

Summary: When Philadelphia selected Randolph with their tenth-overall pick in last year’s draft, there were many scratching their heads as to why. The easy answer is that he was one of most natural hitters in the whole draft class and he has proven them to be correct in his limited pro experience. Randolph has a fluent swing with plus bat speed and a true natural feel for hitting. His overall approach to hitting is advanced for his age and it will be his carrying tool going forward.

After playing shortstop in high school, Randolph quickly moved to left field and has handled it well for someone who has never played the position. Randolph won’t bring much defensive value, nor value on the base paths, but if he can continue to hit and grow into power as he adds strength to his frame, he’ll be an above-average regular for many years.
