Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 60 hit, 60 arm, 55 run, 55 glove, 50 power

Strengths: Flash and flair to his game; looks the part at shortstop; plus bat speed; clean swing path and true feel for contact; tracks spin deep into hitting zone; can manipulate barrel and square it up in all quadrants; natural lift in swing; will flash average raw power in BP; 4.2 from right side – will slow a touch as body matures; graceful, quick strides; quick-twitch athlete in field; solid reads/reactions; clean transfer from glove to hand pairs well with plus arm; projectable frame.

Weaknesses: Power yet to show in-game; lacks muscle build for a mature college player; can show unnecessary aggressiveness at the plate; no upper-minors experience.

Role Ceiling: 60; first-division regular at shortstop; potential all-star.

Risk: Moderate; Limited pro ball experience; needs added strength for power to manifest.

Summary: Shortly after being selected with the first-overall pick in last year’s draft, Swanson was quickly traded to Atlanta in the deal that sent Shelby Miller to Arizona. Swanson flashed five-tool potential at Vanderbilt and it has carried over into his pro career. While he still needs to add weight and strength for his raw power to play in game, Swanson brings a plus present run, quality defense and plus hit tool to the table now. Having five tools that could potential play average to plus at a premium defensive position makes Swanson one of the better shortstop prospects in the game.
