Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 60 FB, 55 SL, 50 CH, 55 Command

Strengths: Big, projectable frame; could handle SP workload with added strength/weight; repeats delivery with ease; pounds strike zone with all three pitches; FB works in low 90s; late, explosive life; can reach back for more velocity when needed; SL can show swing-and-miss type offering; it’s his go-to secondary; low-to-mid 80s; tight, short break, horizontal shape with tilt; will flash plus; CH will play average; plays well off of FB; low-80s velocity with tumbling action; ability to command it down in the zone.

Weaknesses: SL can be inconsistent; lack deception at times; frame is physically immature for a college arm – raising concerns of ability to add good weight. Command can come and go; loses stamina late in starts; no real true plus secondary; can find barrels sometimes; injury history.

Role Ceiling: 50; #4 SP.

Risk: Moderate; limited pro experience; injury history on resume; needs to show he can handle a SP workload.

Short Summary: The Nationals have a history of success drafting injured pitchers. Fedde was no different from an injury standpoint, but post-Tommy John surgery he showed the ability to regain his command quickly after his pro debut. Fedde has a big projectable frame, but strength will be needed for him to handle the strenuous workload of a mid-rotation starter. His three-pitch mix as play true due to his command within the strike zone and he can disguise his slider and changeup off his fastball by delivering them all from the same arm , with the same arm speed. Proving he is healthy will be Fedde’s biggest task; once he builds arm strength, he should see time in the upper minors this year.
