Prospect Spotlight

I saw Carmona on my swing through Extended Spring Training. The Brewers assigned him to Helena in the Pioneer League once Short-Season affiliates began play. He was part of the prospects sent to Baltimore in the Jonathan Schoop trade this July. The switch-hitting Carmona played shortstop in my looks, but his body and footwork lead me to project him to a corner, eventually shifting over to third base. His arm is strong enough to profile at the hot corner, but he struggled with accuracy in this look, and if that development of the arm doesn’t come, he could become a candidate for left field. He is a fringy runner at best, so pressure will be on the bat for him to profile. In this look, he was hyper-aggressive and took big hacks with limited success. Carmona has bat speed and wrist strength to impact the ball, so a quieter swing that increases his barrel control will be a big developmental step. There are tools here, but he’s a lotto-ticket type prospect.
