Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 55 power, 50 hit, 50 arm

Strengths: Big size and strength; plus bat speed; natural leverage in swing; short bat-to-ball ability in hitting zone; true feel for barrel; natural feel to use all fields; plus raw power; present gap-to-gap doubles power will turn into HR power with maturity; can get extended on pitches on outer half; shows ability to recognize spin; athleticism for size; average arm strength.

Weaknesses: Aggressive approach; will expand zone often; needs to become more selective at plate; lacks lateral agility and actions at third base; move to first base imminent, which puts added pressure on bat to hit for power; well below average run; body could be high maintenance going forward; extreme size could be a disadvantage and will lose athleticism as he gets bigger; large gap between present role and projected future; no pro experience above Class A.

Role Ceiling: 55; above-average regular at first base.

Risk: Extreme; large gap between present and future role; limited pro experience.

Summary: While dominating Class A pitching as an 18-year-old, Reyes showed plus raw power and enough barrel control, leading many evaluators to believe that he’ll continue hitting as he reaches the upper minors. Reyes is a massive man, but has sneaky athleticism at third base along with a plus arm. While he may not be done growing, and a move to first base might be in the cards for him, the power potential should relieve some of the pressure on his bat. At such a young age, Reyes shows an advanced feel for the strike zone, and pitch recognition that have evaluators believing that his hit and power tools could ultimately play above average in each aspect.
