Prospect Spotlight

Schnell capitalized on late helium leading up to last year’s draft, going 32nd overall to the Rays after raising his stock considerably in the spring. Schnell’s tall, lean frame and sweet left-handed stroke elicit comparisons to Christian Yelich and Kyle Tucker at the same age, though he isn’t nearly as polished as a hitter as those two. A cold-weather player, Schnell’s bat likely will take time to develop as he acclimates to pro-level pitching. Schnell is fast and athletic enough to profile in CF despite being fairly tall for the position, and his arm is more than enough for RF if he does move down the defensive spectrum (he touched 94 mph from the mound as a high schooler). There’s considerable risk with this type of prospect, but Schnell’s upside is significant if it all comes together. He’s likely ticketed for Extended Spring Training before a heading to a short-season affiliate.
