Espino signed with the Mets for a $300K bonus in 2016. The rangy infielder recently turned 19-years-old and has started 2019 in Extended Spring Training after making his stateside debut in the GCL last summer.
At 6-foot-2 and 176 pounds, Espino’s lean, wiry frame has twitch throughout and projects to add strength. His best tools are on defense, moving between SS and 2B with standout actions. He fields through the ball with soft hands and is light on his feet, ranging well to both sides and looking like a versatile defender higher up the ladder. Espino will need to get stronger to grow into much offensive impact, and he currently gets blown away by velocity and shows early-stages pitch recognition. The glovework and body type make him a 35+ Follow, but there needs to be more with the bat to move up into FV 40 prospect status or higher.
