Though Eierman slashed .313/.431/.675 with 23 homeruns last spring, he struggled with wood in each of the last two summers, including a stint with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team last year where he posted an OPS of just .407. In a three game sweep of Evansville last weekend, the shortstop went 4-for-15 with a pair of doubles, four strikeouts, and no walks. Eierman has an average glove and a plus arm, with easy carry across the diamond, giving him a chance to stick at shortstop long-term. At the plate, Eierman starts with an even, wide stance with high hands, then displays plus bat speed through the zone. An aggressive hitter, there’s some swing-and-miss to Eierman’s game, and some opportunity to improve his pitch recognition. The aggression and bat speed lend itself to a pull heavy approach, as Eierman only put one ball in play to the right side of second base all series, and that was a check swing groundout to first base. An above average runner, Eierman is able to contribute on the bases as well, evidenced by his 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts thus far. Eierman got off to a slow start this spring, but he’s been warming up as of late. With recent draft trends indicating a premium on college hitting, Eierman could come off the board in the mid-to-late part of the first round. |
