Prospect Spotlight

Martin was named the Gulf Coast League MVP after slashing .307/.457/.630 on the backfields of Florida just a few months removed from graduating high school in 2017. The Pirates assigned him aggressively to Low-A to begin 2018, and while he struggled there—ultimately moving down to the Appy League once short-season opened—Martin has fared much better in his second crack at the South Atlantic League this year.

Named an all-star at mid-season after hitting 18 home runs in the first half, he’s making more consistent contact but still showing issues with strikeouts and lefties that could limit the ceiling up the ladder. Still great value for a 17th round pick, the realistic ceiling here is a righty-mashing platoon piece at 1B. There will be pressure to produce at the plate all the way to the big leagues, as Martin can’t play anywhere else and is a one-dimensional power player.
