Player Notes
A member of Team Mexico in the most recent World Baseball Classic, Velazquez spent nearly all of his pro career dating back to his 2010 signing in his home country's Triple-A equivalent summer league as well as playing winter ball. He was named the summer league's Rookie of the Year in 2010 and was twice named the winter league's Player of the Year, in 2014 and most recently in 2017. Most of his career was spent with the Piratas de Campeche, though he spent one season, 2016, with the Acereros del Norte before being reacquired by Campeche, who then sold his contract to the Red Sox prior to the 2017 MLB season. In 2016 with the Acereros, he was 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 22 starts, allowing 115 hits in 131 1/3 innings and walking just 16 while striking out 120. Control has been his hallmark over the years. At age 28, he becomes the second debutante in as many days to debut at the age of 28 or older, a day after 32-year-old Austin Bibens-Dirkx debuted for the Rangers.
