Debut Details
| May 18, in an 8-3 loss to the Athletics. The starting pitcher, he took the loss, allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits over five innings, walking two and striking out four. Of 101 pitches thrown, 68 were for strikes. In the first inning, Rajai Davis led off with a single but was caught stealing second. Matt Joyce drew a walk, reaching second on a passed ball and scored on Jed Lowrie two-run homer to center field. Khris Davis followed with a solo homer to center before Ryon Healy struck out swinging and Stephen Vogt grounded out to third to end the inning. In the second, Trevor Plouffe struck out swinging, Chad Pinder grounded out to third and Adam Rosales flew out to left, Velazquez's lone 1-2-3 inning. In the third, Rajai Davis doubled to center but was thrown out at third. Matt Joyce and Jed Lowrie hit back-to-back-singles to center and right reslectively before Khris Davis grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. In the fourth, Healy singled to second, Vogt flew out to right and Plouffe doubled to left to score Healy, after which Pinder homered to center before Rosales struck out looking and Rajai Davis grounded out to third. In the fifth, Joyce struck out swinging, Lowrie grounded out to third and Khris Davis drew a walk before Healy grounded back to Velazquez to end the inning. Left-handed reliever Robbie Ross Jr. came on to start the sixth inning to end Velazquez's night. |
Player Notes
| A member of Team Mexico in the most recent World Baseball Classic, Velazquez spent nearly all of his pro career dating back to his 2010 signing in his home country's Triple-A equivalent summer league as well as playing winter ball. He was named the summer league's Rookie of the Year in 2010 and was twice named the winter league's Player of the Year, in 2014 and most recently in 2017. Most of his career was spent with the Piratas de Campeche, though he spent one season, 2016, with the Acereros del Norte before being reacquired by Campeche, who then sold his contract to the Red Sox prior to the 2017 MLB season. In 2016 with the Acereros, he was 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 22 starts, allowing 115 hits in 131 1/3 innings and walking just 16 while striking out 120. Control has been his hallmark over the years. At age 28, he becomes the second debutante in as many days to debut at the age of 28 or older, a day after 32-year-old Austin Bibens-Dirkx debuted for the Rangers. |
