Debut Details
| July 20, in an 8-6 loss to the Blue Jays. The fourth of five pitchers, he walked one and struck out one in one scoreless inning. Coming on to start the seventh in place of right-handed reliever Ben Taylor, he struck out Steve Pearce swinging on three pitches and Ezequiel Carrera grounded out to first base unassisted before walking Ryan Goins on four pitches. Darwin Barney then flew out to center field to end the inning. |
Player Notes
| One of two minor leaguers named Kyle Martin (well, now technically just one is left, the Phillies first baseman at Double-A Reading), the senior sign out of Texas A&M had been drafted out of high school in Austin by the Nationals in the 39th round in 2009 and then again in 2012 in the 35th round by the White Sox. Converted from a sidearm delivery to a more convention over-the-top delivery late in his college career, that move also helped his prospect status and his success. He has a fastball in the low- to mid-90s and a plus changeup which gives him a nice one-two punch coming out of the back of the bullpen. He averaged 10.5 SO/9 at Pawtucket in 2016, when he posted a 3.38 ERA and was 6-for-6 in save opps in 36 games, striking out 78 and walking 21 in 66 2/3 innings. In 2015 at Portland (Double-A) he'd posted a 4.50 ERA in 37 games in relief, fanning 48 and walking 16 in 42 innings while also spending two months on the DL. |
