An LSU commit, Ripoll showed solid stuff in his outing against powerhouse American Heritage on Thursday at the National High School Invitational. Working from a high three-quarter arm slot, Ripoll was able to hold Heritage to just one run over his 6.1 innings of work. He pitched off an 88-to-91 mph fastball that he kept low in the zone for a majority of the game. Ripoll showed occasional arm-side run on his fastball, making it difficult for hitters to consistently barrel up. He mixed in a mid-70s curveball that he was able to locate down in the zone, and keep opposing hitters off balance. He’ll mix in a changeup, though he only threw it a few times in the outing. Ripoll’s windup generates power, as he contorts his body toward second base before uncurling toward the plate. The hip turn adds deception, and Ripoll repeated the delivery throughout the outing, getting good extension toward the plate with a consistent stride. With a competitive mentality and above average athleticism, Ripoll looks primed to contribute at LSU next year, where he can continue to develop his secondary pitches. |
