Player Notes
One of the Pirates' last cuts out of spring training where he was a non-roster invitee, Ortiz became the third Pirates player to make his debut in the space of a few days, joining Ngoepe and Neverauskas on the internationally diverse squad. Originally drafted out of Benjamin Harrison High School in Cayey, Puerto Rico, in 2008 by the Twins, he has gotten a lot of extra at-bats in as a staple in the competitive Puerto Rican winter league. In 2016, he led the organization with 17 home runs at Indianapolis after hitting .248 with 17 home runs, 78 RBIs and 31 doubles in his first full Triple-A season at Rochester in 2015. Despite his size, his quick bat has allowed him to connect for a double-digit tally in home runs for five seasons in a row coming into 2017.
