Coming on in the sixth inning with Albert Pujols on first base and one out in relief of right-handed starter Hisashi Iwakuma, Pagan gave up a single to right field to Luis Valbuena, advancing Pujols to third, and a sacrifice fly to Andrelton Simmons to score Pujols. Ben Revere followed with a single to center field, putting runners at the corners with one out before Cliff Pennington singled to center to bring home Valbuena. At this point, Pagan was relieved by right-hander Nick Vincent, who induced a bunt from Martin Maldonado, but he then gave up a two-run double to Yunel Escobar which scored Revere and Pennington, before Vincent struck out Kole Calhoun swinging to end the inning. Pagan was tagged with a blown save.
