Debut Details
May 3, in a 10-6 loss to Miami. The third of five pitchers, he allowed three runs on two hits in one inning pitched. Of 17 pitches, 13 were for strikes. Starting the seventh inning in relief of right-handed reliever Austin Pruitt, he gave up a single back to the mound to Miguel Rojas. Adeiny Hechavarria then reached on a sac bunt that went for a single, and Alvarado's wild pitch with Ichiro Suzuki at the plate allowed the runners to advance to second and third. Though Suzuki grounded out to first base, J.T. Realmuto followed with a two-run triple to right field and scored on Martin Prado's sacrifice fly to right before Christian Yelich ended the rally by grounding out to second base.

Player Notes
A member of Venezuela's World Baseball Classic squad this past spring, Alvarado comes off a 2016 season split between two Class A stops, Bowling Green and Charlotte, where he combined to go 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 37 games, striking out 85 batters in 70 2/3 innings, walking 55 and allowing 50 hits for a .199 BAA. He's limited hitters to just a .212 batting average against over his five-plus seasons, and the Rays' shifting him from a starter to a reliever has helped his climb. He brings a fastball that can touch 100 mph and a plus curveball to the mound.
