Debut Details
April 3, in a 14-3 loss to the Dodgers. Coming in to catch as part of a defensive double switch in the bottom of the seventh inning, he replaced Austin Hedges behind the plate and slid into reliever and RHP Miguel Diaz's eighth spot in the batting order. In his lone at-bat in the top of the eighth, he grounded out back to the mound.

Player Notes
A torn labrum suffered in 2015 cost Torrens all of that season, and affected his production in 2016 as well, but when healthy he has a plus arm and provides good defense behind the plate. Before his injury, he’d been considered a Top 10 prospect with the Yankees, and made his big league debut a month shy of his 21st birthday. A catcher with that kind of upside could stick with the Padres as a third catcher through a season during which the club is more about looking towards the future than winning it all now, an approach which helped snare three excellent young talents in the Rule 5 Draft.
