Player Notes
The Louisiana Tech product's rise has been pretty meteoric, especially for a 20th-round pick, but he could very well be the club's closer of the not-too-distant future. He made it to the final round of cuts out of spring training before being assigned, and had not blown a save opportunity at Triple-A before his call-up. With a career 1.89 ERA and 30 saves in 34 chances, he's posted a career line of 109 2/3 innings, 77 hits, 24 walks and 167 strikeouts with a .192 BAA and is pretty much as good a back-end-of-the-bullpen prospect as there is right now in the minors -- well, now the majors. He throws a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s, a plus curveball and a plus cutter, and has a good, strong pitcher's body. A starter in college, he was shifted to the pen as soon as he turned pro. He made his pro debut at Short-Season A Tri-City in 2015 and posted a 1.38 ERA, striking out 58 and walking five (no, not a typo) in 33 innings. In 2016, he zoomed through Fort Wayne (Class A), Lake Elsinore (High A) and El Paso (skipping Double-A completely) to go 5-3 with a 1.74 ERA in 38 games, collecting 11 saves and striking out 78 while walking 11 in 51 2/3 innings, allowing 32 hits for a .173 BAA.
