Prospect Spotlight

The Potential Tools: 60 FB, 50 CB, 50 CH, 50 Command

Strengths: Big, durable pitchers’ frame; arm-side life on FB in low 90s that can touch higher; shows feel for both CB/CH; can throw either for strike early in counts and as chase pitch; can work in and out with all three pitches at times; CB shows 11-to-5 shape with some depth; will flash higher than average; CH plays well off of FB, with same arm action and late fading action; will flash higher than average often; upper-minors arm with little left to prove.

Weaknesses: CB has inconsistent shape; can become soft and slurvy; lacks deception – easy to track pitches out of hand; command can vary from start to start; relies on FB/CH combo often – will struggle to get RHH out consistently.

Role Ceiling: 50; #4 SP.

Risk: Moderate; upper-minors arm with inconsistent third pitch and command within zone; limited projection left.

Summary: Blair, along with Dansby Swanson, was a large part of the deal that sent Shelby Miller to Arizona. Blair is a big, broad, workhorse-like SP that throws three pitches consistently and can show a “show-me” slider at times. He has little left to prove in the minor leagues and has no projection left, but if Atlanta wanted Blair to start the season in the major leagues, he would be able to hold his own. If he starts the year in Triple-A Gwinnett, fine tuning his command and consistency with his curveball should get him in Atlanta by midseason.
